Strings
The University of Arkansas Department of Music offers instruction in all string instruments with dedicated, full-time artist-teachers. Students receive weekly private lessons and group studio instruction. Performance and music education majors prepare for solo recitals as part of the requirements for graduation. Studio classes include performance opportunities, discussion forums, and review of solo, ensemble, and orchestral literature.
The String Area focuses on chamber music and faculty-student collaboration in performance and teaching. Under the direction of faculty mentors, the Medaris Quartet is a select scholarship string quartet made of the University’s top string musicians. Dolcelli performs new and arranged music specifically for mass cello ensemble and faculty perform with students in the Chamber Orchestra. Every year, a number of national and internationally known guest artists visit campus to give recitals, workshops, and masterclasses for string students.
Graduate Studies
The graduate performance program is rigorous and designed to help student progress to the next level in their abilities and to prepare for exciting careers in music. Many of our graduates have gone on to doctoral programs around the country and perform in numerous regional and international orchestras.
Generous funding is available to qualified applicants for Graduate Assistant positions in the Department of Music. Duties may include chamber music coaching, working with the University Symphony Orchestra, and other duties assigned by the department chair.
